REPOSE / Performance | 2022 to Present
RePose is a long-duration, studio-based live performance that incorporates an onsite darkroom, lighting studio, and an installation of xeroxed images of hundreds of examples of “women’s poses”. I source these “women’s poses” from my own personal collection and from site specific archival research– they come from fashion, vintage pornographic magazines, artist monographs, art history books, museum catalogs, and anthropological studies that span centuries and continents. Over the course of these live performances, I choose poses from among these images to “re-pose” using my own body, slowly producing a series of new self-portraits in real time. At the end of each day, I develop and print the exposed film in the on-site darkroom, and then hang the resulting silver gelatin prints next to its source image. My resulting self-portraits collectively form a new typology of women's poses. I performed RePose twice now; at CalArts REDCAT in Los Angeles in May 2022, and for the ongoing exhibition Chronorama Redux at the Palazzo Grazzi in Venice, Italy. I work in the gallery and produce all work on-site. The performance is meant to be re-staged and ongoing.
