SAD SONGS (2009-2010)
I am interested in themes of time, ritual, and the tension between public and private space. I conceptualized this project in the dead of a Vermont winter during a long stretch of below freezing weather. In order to combat the feeling of isolation brought on by the cold I decided to get out of my studio and make art in unfamiliar territory. My goal was to sing as many sad songs as possible in public wearing my headphones. Eventually, the songs were chosen for their personal subjective meaning. I chose to sing these songs in retail locations because, as a culture, I think people go to these places, not because they necessarily need something, but for comfort– to walk around in a daze and pass the time.
